Learn How to Overcome the Pitfalls in Enterprise SIP Trunking to get to the Benefits

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

If you are searching for the right network infrastructure to streamline costs and provide the power and sustainability you need to support the goals of your firm, SIP trunking is a powerful platform. In fact, the platform offers a value proposition that exceeds many others as it can lower operating costs and produce a compelling return on investment. Once SIP trunking is deployed, it can also be used to integrate with Unified Communications applications to continue to drive productivity.

The challenge, of course, in deploying enterprise SIP trunking, is to overcome the common roadblocks that exist. To help you get started, TMCnet is partnering with Ingate to offer you a free webinar: Successfully Deploying Enterprise SIP Trunking: Tools and Techniques for Overcoming Common Roadblocks, scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 11:00am ET/ 8:00am PT.

Register today for this informative event and you will learn how proper planning can help you set the stage for rapid installation. You’ll also learn how to drive interoperability between the IP-PBX and the service provider network, firewall and NAT traversal, security and the management of Quality of Service.

When you place an Enterprise Session Border Controller (E-SBC) at the edge of the enterprise network, it plays a crucial role in solving challenges that exist with launching SIP trunking. This free and innovative event will deliver access to the tools and techniques you need to have in place to overcome common obstacles and methods that exist to simplify your transition from traditional voice to SIP trunks and beyond.

This event will teach you about SIP trunks and how the convergence of voice and data on one network is a competitive advantage for enterprises; the typical scenarios that exist for both SMBs and larger enterprises; and migration strategies. These strategies help you to explore if your network is ready; if the migration is expensive; what you will gain or lose; why you need an enterprise SBC; if you can keep your IP-PBX on your LAN; how to resolve NAT traversal issues; security challenges; and the length of time it takes to start using SIP trunks.

Don’t miss this webinar if you are a systems integrator, reseller or distributor; an enterprise management professional responsible for communication services; an enterprise technical staff supporting VoIP networks; a service provider of network operations, product management or services marketing staff; a telecommunications equipment manufacturer seeking to enhance product offerings; or a marketing and operations manager for hosted service providers.

This is one event you won’t want to miss – register today!

Research: SIP Trunking Services Triggers Growth of Enterprise SBCs

By Mini Swamy, TMCnet Contributor

Infonetics Research (NewsAlert), an international research and consulting firm, surveyed 109 trunk service purchase-decision makers at medium and large enterprises and gathered information about their deployment plans and other allied factors for SIP trunking services along with reasons for choosing a specific service provider. The latest Enterprise Session Border Controllers forecast report byInfonetics Research indicated that Enterprise session border controller revenue increased by over 70 percent globally because of an increased adoption of SIP trunking services.

According to Diane Myers, Infonetics’ directing analyst for VoIP and IMS, a recent survey of North American Enterprises revealed that more than 43 percent of the respondents claimed to be using SIP trunks in some form without completely displacing PSTN connections. Upgradation of voice infrastructure coincided with a move to SIP trunking, which, in turn, triggered the growth of enterprise SBCs.

Although SIP trunking is being deployed by more businesses because of flexibility, easier management and infrastructure upgrades, it is not as if legacy technologies will see an early exit. In fact, until at least 2013, TI lines will remain the most commonly used trunking service.

Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft and IBM occupy the top four slots in the installed PBX manufacturers category, clearly demonstrating the growing adoption of UC demonstrating a very competitive landscape for SIP trunking.

The survey showed that the adoption of SIP trunking services grew by over 220 percent worldwide in 2010 and as a key driver for enterprise SBCs enabled the SBC market, especially in North America, to grow five-fold within as many years.

Although there were over 30 vendors in the SBC market, it was dominated by less than 10 vendors with Acme Packet and Cisco accounting for over 50 percent of worldwide sales in 2010.

Infonetics analyst Diane Myers is co-hosted a free Webinar with AudioCodes, “Things to Consider When Migrating to SIP Trunking,” on April 28, 11:00 a.m. Eastern.

Details regarding upcoming and related research can be had from the company’s Website.

In related news, according to Diane Myers, Infonetics Research’s directing analyst for VoIP and IMS, the shift to IP is reflected in the continued rise of SBCs and the decline in trunk media gateways in 2010. SBCs ended 2010 with a phenomenal revenue increase of 42 percent over 2009 due to increases in IP interconnectivity in fixed and mobile networks, and growth in the number of VoIP subscribers.

SIP Trunking Services grew by over 220 percent worldwide in 2010, especially in North America, to grow five-fold within as many years.

SIP Trunks

What is SIP Trunking?

A SIP Trunk is a service offered by an ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider) that permits businesses that have a PBX installed to use Voice-over-IP (VoIP) outside the enterprise network by using the same connection as the Internet connection.

At ECTtelecom we see SIP Trunks as paving the way to an all IP, all SIP world where businesses can work without geographical constraints, employees can contribute equally regardless of location, and everyone is reachable anywhere and anytime as long as there’s access to an Internet connection. This is the vision the IETF had when they first introduced the SIP protocol, the idea of true global connectivity. SIP Trunking extends the notion of seamless connectivity within a business to customers, remote employees, anyone working outside the corporate network. This is the next evolution of Telecommunications – we look forward to sharing SIP Trunking with you.
